Overview

"Hi, everybody, I'm Archie Bell and the Drells, from Houston, Texas" -- with this proclamation of name and place, so begins Tighten Up one of the finest soul records of the late 1960s and a virtual template for the "Space City" funk to follow. Though it arrived on the national charts via Atlantic Records, Archie Bell & the Drells first cut Tighten Up for the Houston label Ovide -- also home to the T.S.U. Toronados, and Ovide's very own, homegrown version of Booker T. & the MG's -- the company virtually defined Houston soul and funk in and around the turn of the decade, establishing a signature sound driven by chicken-scratch guitars, sugar-sweet organs, and jazzy, propulsive horns. There's nothing here quite so miraculous as "Tighten Up," but its spirit is present in all 17 of these cuts -- highlights include the Americans of 72's "Crackerjack," Sebastian Williams' "Get Your Point Over" and the Acres of Grass' "Football."
