Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
Are you drawn to hardware stores? Do you like to use your hands to create cool things? Do you dream of making something "nutty?" If so, then this book is for you. This book talks about using various items that can be found from a local hardware store to create interesting objects. Directions are included for making a robot pencil sharpener, a Lock-nest monster to go on your school lock, a baby bird magnet and even a hardware chess set. The step-by-step instructions found on each page are illustrated as well as described, so that even someone who has never used a screwdriver will be able to make these innovative objects without much difficulty. The directions are straightforward and simple so that they can be easily followed. The objects are very useful and quite unique. This book is wonderful for young boys who like to create things with their hands but wouldn't be caught dead opening up a craft book. 2003, Kids Can Press, Ages 8 to 12.

Gr 3-5-Clearly written instructions and ideas, illustrated with color diagrams and photographs. Crocheting explains basic techniques and has step-by-step instructions for making several articles such as bookmarks and purses. Along with basic camera information, Picture This explores such concepts as light and shadow, action, and point of view. The crafts include framing and matting as well as suggestions for arranging pictures in a scrapbook. Some of the photos in this title are in black and white. Funky Junk is full of ideas that will appeal to kids who love to explore the gizmos that are usually found in bins at the hardware store. Directions are given for turning nuts, bolts, corner braces, and so on into jewelry, a chess set, and more. Parental supervision is a must for many of these projects, especially those requiring the use of a utility knife or epoxy. These books are welcome supplements for crafts and hobby collections.-Genevieve Gallagher, Orange County Public Library, VA Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information.

    Difficult to get parts

I thought this book would have some fun ideas for our 8 yr old boy to do. We decided to do a project from this book for his birthday party. We gave up on the pencil sharpener robot after we were unable to find a suitable pencil sharpener. Talked son into the alien keychain. Spent about an hour in Home Depot finding parts. Found an okay spring to use, but later decided to try to find the one in the book, 7 stops later, still didn't find the right spring. Unless they start selling this book with supply kits, I wouldn't waste my money on it. MIGHT be okay for group project ideas, but to spend all of this time looking for supplies for one child's project is definitely not worth it.
