Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Marilyn Courtot
Can you make a funny face? Twist your mouth, stick out your tongue or just smile. Our faces are a means of expressing our emotions. A frown or sad facial expression shows our dismay or distress over something that has or is happening. When a bird lands on Lucy's head, she is surprised. Milly on the other hand is obviously angry when a dog steals one of her shoes; not only does her face show her anger, but the rigidity of her body emphasizes her displeasure. The spreads near the end shows the kids making funny faces and happy faces at what appears to be a costume party, followed by the text asking readers "Which face can you make?" as it reprises the emotions shown. The illustrations are simple and the figures have a bit of a cartoon feel. The focus is on the faces, but costumes and body positions also provide plenty of information. Part of the "Toddler Tales" series. Reviewer: Marilyn Courtot
Kirkus Reviews
Beginning with the entirely accurate premise that "[e]veryone can make a face," Walker then rings the changes on the different sorts of faces one might make. "Sam makes a happy face" as he gazes at an equally happy-looking balloon; "Olive makes a sad face" as she regards her broken wand (tears drip to reinforce the emotion); "Milly makes an angry face" as she shouts at her dog, who has stolen one of her bright red shoes. Emotional literacy is something kids can't start learning too early, and this is a cheerily whimsical approach. The delicacy of the bright gouache paintings skews this title to older toddlers, as babies are unlikely to note such details as the thieving dog, but for the right age child, it hits the spot.
