Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly - Publisher's Weekly
The humorist who explained How to Eat Like a Child and Teenage Romance presents a third winner, a collection of 12 essays on the modern extended family. Today the group includes ``Us, The Ex, The Ex's New Mate, The New Mate's Ex, and The Kids.'' With her inimitable wit, Ephron describes situations created by joint custody, by wily kids trying to take advantage of both step- and natural parents ``My own mother doesn't put funny sauce on chicken!''. She also discloses aspects of relationships among the re-wed adults, sharing child care and behaving civilly to each other, while privately criticizing or resenting former spouses and their new loves ``We never went to Paris while we were married''. The book will make readers laugh loudly, but probably wince too as they recognize their households, joined like jigsaw puzzles, with visible breaks between the pieces. 75,000 first printing; Literary Guild alternate; first serial to New York Times Magazine, Esquire and Redbook. October 27
Library Journal
Ephron attempts a humorous look at joint custody and the extended family that results when two formerly married people share in raising their children. Indeed, parents involved in the innovation called joint custody need all the humor and help they can get to achieve a satisfying family life. However, while Ephron's book is sometimes funny, more often reality cuts too deeply for laughs. Furthermore, not all the pieces fit into the general theme, giving the book a somewhat haphazard tone. A witty take on the subject requires a lighter touch than it gets here. Hilma F. Cooper, Cheltenham Twp. Libs., Pa.

    Not very good...

This wasn't very good. I had read some quotes by her before and liked them, she's good for quotes, maybe not whole books, that sounds mean, it was alright I suppose, a quick read at least.
