Overview

While many have regarded politics in America as a noble calling to public service, that doesn't mean that those same people have considered themselves above throwing about as much mud as possible when an election is at stake. The pomp and circumstance of elected life in the White House stands in stark contrast to what professors David and Johnny Johnson refer to as the "foolhardiness, folly, and fraud" that characterizes most presidential elections.

In their book A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the White House, David and Johnny Johnson highlight eighteen of the funniest elections in American history, from 1828, the first election in which all states had electors, to the election from hell in 2000. Each chapter is heavily illustrated with contemporary photographs and cartoons, highlighting the tumultuous and passionate political debates raging at the time. The book concludes with a gallery of photographs of all the presidents, each accompanied by a piquant quote, ranging from Henry Watterson on Teddy Roosevelt ("As sweet a gentleman as ever scuttled a ship or cut a throat") to Woodrow Wilson's summation of Chester A. Arthur ("A nonentity with side whiskers").
