Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
Imagine a joke book as part of a series. This one is and the name of the series, "Kids Can Read," says it all. The riddles included here are marked as "level 3: Kids Can Read Alone," and they cover a number of reading objectives such as introducing longer, more complex stories and sentences, more challenging vocabulary, language play, minimal repetition and visual cues, all of which is stated in the front of the book. The riddles are indeed funny, and they harbor that corny, almost dopey sense of humor that can send a young person into a spasm. There is a good deal of joy, imagination, and color infused in the watercolor illustrations, all of which contain black-ink outlining and are framed on every page with unpredictably shaped and patterned borders. One has to dig deep in the book to find out who did the writing and who did the illustrating (these facts are posted on the copyright page, which closes the book), but that will be no matter for the intended audience; they will be too busy exercising their funny bones to care. 2004, Kids Can Press, Ages 4 to 8.
—Susan Schott Karr
School Library Journal
K-Gr 3-These titles provide budding comedians with material in an easy-to-read format. In Funtime, the riddles focus on sports and leisure-time activities (e.g., "Why don't cheetahs like to play hide and seek? Because they're always spotted"), while the quips in Recess are school oriented ("Why is the library the tallest part of the school? Because it has so many stories"). Most of the selections are plays on words, which will encourage young readers to think about the meanings of the terms. The cartoon illustrations are amusing and also help to explain the jokes. Riddle books encourage even reluctant readers to persevere in order to get to the punch line and these offerings are appealing choices.-Cynde Suite, Bartow County Library System, Adairsville, GA Copyright 2004 Reed Business Information.
