The art quilt doesn't cover a bed or pose on a couch. It is designed to do nothing but hang on the wall and attract attention. The precision cutting, measuring, piecing, and sewing required for quilts that will be used and washed, then, is not strictly necessary for the art quilt. In making her collage quilts, Wasilowski, who owns a line of hand-dyed textiles, uses scissors as drawing tools to cut directly into fused fabric that is then applied to a background fabric. The resulting quilts-of a jaunty folk art bird or a teapot in midair pouring tea into a waiting cup-are full of color and whimsy. Wasilowski teaches the beginner various techniques she has developed over the years, beginning with "Fusing 101" and progressing through a series of eight skill-building projects that include a simple free-cut flower quilt. Finishing techniques and an inspirational gallery of fused art quilts complete the volume. An excellent book for the fabric collage novice; enthusiastically recommended for public library quilting collections. Copyright 2005 Reed Business Information.
