"They want our beauty.they don't want us." A strong statement by Marina Reanaud, who is the mother of Barbara Renaud Gonzalez, one of the many people to write a chapter in the book The Future of Media: Resistance and Reform in the 21st Century. Here is a book that goes into great detail, sometimes more than a person would want to know, about media. Each chapter gives a new insight of who, what, where, when, and why of the media.
This book, which was edited by Robert McChesney, Russell Newman, and Ben Scott, is highly inspirational in getting the reader motivated to help control our media. People need to be heard. The media has too much power and are controlling how people think, feel, and sometimes act.
Michael J. Copps talks about how there is less competition in media and how it is becoming more monolistic. The owners of media are very few, which means they have control over everything. If there is one thing that is emphasized in this book the most it is about how we, the people and citizens, must take control of how the media is operated.
This book keeps you engaged by informing us about the FCC and some of the scandals they have been in. Like, for example, taking millions of dollars worth of travel and entertainment from people they are supposed to "keep an eye on." So the big question remains, who is keeping an eye on the FCC? If you didn't know a lot about the FCC before reading this book, you will definitely have a better perspective on them and how their organization works. Although, some people might not want to know how corrupt things can be.
Hearing all the different voices gives the book an edge, but just like in real life some voices are more monotone than others. That's when the old saying "just grin and bear it" comes to mind. Overall the diverse groups of authors cover a wide range of topics, while at the same time keeping it all connected to one another. The information can get somewhat repetitive, but there is still something to be learned within every chapter.
The Future of Media provides a plethora of information as well as facts and statistics that could astonish anyone that uses any form of media, which is basically everyone.
