Glen O. Gabbard, M.D., is Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas and Professor of Psychiatry at State University of New York in Syracuse. He is also Training and Supervising Analyst at the Center for Psychoanalytic Studies in Houston.

Description: This is an update of a book, first published in 1989, that details the most current scientific and anecdotal evidence for the treatment of many psychiatric disorders.
Purpose: Because the evidence for various treatments continues to accumulate, updates are required in order to assure a book remains relevant. This work provides the latest information about the most effective and beneficial treatments for various, well-researched psychiatric disorders.
Audience: Although it is practical for anyone interested in current treatments offered for mental health problems, this book is primarily aimed at clinicians who are directly involved in the treatment of patients with psychiatric issues.
Features: This edition incorporates recent changes related to the DSM-5 and focuses primarily on treatment instead of assessment or diagnosis. Chapters are organized around DSM-5 categorized disorders and concentrate on evidence-based research, as well as on individual authors' clinical experience and some relevant anecdotal data. Most chapters end with brief conclusions and useful references. Some (such as the one on substance use disorders) contain web-based resources.
Assessment: Comparing it to the previous edition (2007), it becomes clear the editor wished to make some significant changes to this book's practical and functional use. This edition is more compact (more pages but dimensionally smaller and less weighty) and its continued emphasis on evidence-based treatments without extensive discussion of historical perspectives allows it to fulfill its lofty goals. One of the most challenging aspects for an editor of such a book is coordinating numerous authors and combining their work to create a uniform voice. Dr. Gabbard has managed this challenge well and the result is a book that should sit on every mental health clinician's shelf.

The present edition is reduced in size, largely by confining the contributions to treatment issues, with the assumption that readers will familiarize themselves with diagnostic issues by reading DSM-IV. All of the major DSM-IV disorders are covered and all of the major treatment modalities, in 93 contributed chapters by scholars and clinicians who provide a clinically relevant synthesis of the contemporary knowledge in each area.
