Overview

He lost a wager . . . but won a treasure.

Due to a lost wager, the Duke of Ravenham is obliged to bring a pretty little nobody from the country into fashion among the high-sticklers of London Society. Ravenham would never refuse a debt of honor, no matter how unorthodox, so he overlooks Miss Gordon's vulgar relations to do what is necessary, escorting the unsophisticated chit to balls, etc. But what he expects to be an irksome duty turns out to be something quite different as he falls under the spell of his protege's innocent charm. When he lost that wager, he definitely never counted on losing his heart as well!

First impressions can be deceiving.

Miss Gabriella Gordon only came to London at her mother's and sister's insistence, for she'd much rather assist in running her father's veterinary practice than attempt to fit into fashionable society. No sooner has she arrived in London than the exalted (and exceedingly handsome) Duke of Ravenham comes to call. The reason is less than flattering, however: due to a lost wager, the Duke is forced to bring Gabriella into fashion, a "favor" she would certainly refuse if her family would let her. But the more time she spends in the dashing Duke's company, the more conflicted she feels— particularly when she discovers they have more in common than she ever dared dream.

A sweet Regency with a dashing duke, an initially unwilling debutante, and the requisite amount of good, mean-spirited, evil, and bumbling secondary characters to make for a well-told tale.

This book was a fantastic read! Once I started I couldn't seem to put it down and I was annoyed when my breaks at work ended and I had to stop reading. My onlycomplaint is that it took both characters WAY too long to realize their first views of the other weren't true, even after it was said right to their face. Gabriella said that he wasnt just a pretty face a bunch of times before he decided to actuallybelieve her. Besides that I found this book incredibly enjoyable ans will look for more by this author.

A lovely Regency romp! My first Brenda Hiatt novel, but I will swiftly remedy that. As a life-long fan of Jane Austen and of Georgette Heyer (a more than worthy Austen successor), I heartily recommend this author thus far. Her characters are engaging and believable; nicely rendered plots too. This book flowed well and time spent reading was enjoyable and not at all laborious compared to some Austen/Heyer/Regency wannabes.
The character-driven plots and dialogues made the story for me and I look forward to more of the same.
