Overview

As fans of teen spy Alex Rider know, nothing is more fun or mind-boggling than the gadgets that time and again help free him from tight spots, such as the Game Boy that doubled as a Geiger counter in Skeleton Key. Or the CDplayer with the fast-spinning saw blade in Point Blank that helped free Alex from a steel-barred window. Now, for the first time, readers everywhere can glimpse the secret files and blueprints that detail each gadget. It’s almost as much fun as actually owning...

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
For fans of the Alex Rider series, Anthony Horowitz offers a nifty paper-over-board handbook, Alex Rider: The Gadgets, an overview of "all devices used by [the hero] on his first five missions." An opening memo from Alan Blunt expresses concern that these inventions from Scorpia could fall into the wrong hands, and with good reason-each gadget gets (at least) a spread with gatefold, showing precisely how each works, from the Cutter CD Player used to penetrate Point Blanc Academy to the Geiger Counter Games Console that the CIA gave to Alex for his trip to Cuba. This will serve as the perfect segue to Alex Rider's sixth assignment, Ark Angel, in which eco-terrorists target this titular hotel, the first luxury lodgings in outer space, as an environmental threat. If you are a fan of author Anthony Horowitz's "Alex Rider" series, then this book is for you. Released in late 2005, this book is a supplement to all of those top-secret missions the teen spy has completed. For those of you unfamiliar with the series, fourteen-year-old Alex Rider was orphaned at a very young age and raised by his uncle, Ian Rider. While in his uncle's care, the two traveled extensively and, as a result, Alex acquired many unusual skills, such as rock climbing, scuba diving, and fluency in many foreign languages. As a result he was a natural choice to be a young spy and throughout his missions uses many imaginative gadgets. With the help of this book, fans can now learn the specific details and design behind each of Alex's spy tools. Things most kids use on a daily basis have been turned into futuristic weaponry and other "spyware." For example, you will find that in Stormbreaker, Alex uses a Multifunction Games Console that can serve as an electronic bug finder, smoke bomb, fax/photocopier, and audio amplifier. He has also been known to use a Yo Yo that secretly operates as a high-tensile climbing device. There is no end to what Smithers, the genius behind Alex's weaponry, has come up with. Fans and newbies alike will find this detailed blueprint manual fun to peruse and may even find themselves imagining how they might use some of these gadgets on a day-to-day basis, spy or not!

Gr 5-10-Since Alex Rider is a teenage spy, the gadget inventors must come up with various devices that someone his age would logically have in his possession. The resulting equipment includes a hand-held game console, radio mouth brace, a pizza-delivery assassin kit, etc. Each device is shown in blueprint format, with a brief explanation of its purpose. The cases in which the gadgets appeared are referenced, so readers can now visualize how Alex got out of the scrapes he got into. A glossary explains the key scientific terms used in the explanations. A must-have for fans of the adventure/mystery series.-Lynn Evarts, Sauk Prairie High School, Prairie du Sac, WI Copyright 2006 Reed Business Information.

    I Also Recommend:

    I highly recommend this book.

This book gives a realistic idea about what the tools are that MI-6 uses.(Military Intelligence 6.) This book has great descriptions of some items that most people haven't heard of. There are 7 other books in this series. Again I give this series a 5 ***** rating. The series is unbelieveably good.

    Great companion to the novels

This perfect companion to the novels of Alex Rider feature great fold out bluprints of all the gadgets MI6, aswell as the CIA and evil SCORPIA have supplied him on his first five missions. Hopefully a revised edition featuring gadgets from Ark Angel and the upcoming Snakehead will be published.

    MUST READ

There is a famous book series called Alex Rider. It is written by Anthony Horowitz. This book is about the tech he used throughout his adventures. One of the pieces of tech he used was the recording portable CD player at operation Stormbreaker. The reason I read this book was I liked the Alex Rider series and I love tech. I would recommend this book to anyone who's read the Alex Rider series and liked it.
