Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal
Gr 5-7Beautiful full-color, full-page photographs enhance this overview of both the geological evolution of the islands and their unusual inhabitants. The interesting story is clearly and well told; however, the layout is a little cluttered, with each double-page spread featuring photos, captions, and boxed text. Nevertheless, as an introduction, this is an attractive choice.Eva Elisabeth Von Ancken, Trinity Pawling School, NY

Spectacular photography and clear, concise text reveal the fascinating story of the Galapagos--the formation of the islands, how they came to be inhabited, and the amazing evolutionary changes taking place there. Difficult concepts, such as plate tectonics and Darwin's theory of evolution, are explained in simple-to-understand terms and accompanied by appropriate examples. Visual learners will benefit from the book's appealing layout, which presents small doses of text surrounded by captioned color photographs, small diagrams, and maps. Covering subjects as varied as volcanoes, plant and animal life, evolution, erosion, and human exploitation of the environment, this will be a useful research tool as well as a rich supplement for the science curriculum. A glossary is appended.
