Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Norah Piehl
Frank and Joe Hardy are undercover agents in their father's investigative unit ATAC (American Teens Against Crime), going undercover to solve cases in places where adult investigators just would not fit in. This time around, it is at Galaxy X, a new extreme sports theme park on an island off the North Carolina coast: a "testosterone paradise," as Frank puts it. As the boys find out when they get to Galaxy X, the graffiti and vandalism that have shown up in advance of the park opening are just the beginning of the problems faced by the new park, the brainchild of music magnate Tyrone McKenzie. Who could want to sabotage the park's opening? A jealous competitor? McKenzie himself? Bitter environmentalists? Can the Hardy Boys solve the puzzle in time for the grand opening gala? Snarkier narration and a focus on extreme sports give this book a hipper edge than old school "Hardy Boys" mysteries, but Frank and Joe's earnest do-gooder attitude (and their polo-shirted photos on the cover) still give the book an old-fashioned feel. The brothers take turns narrating alternating chapters, each of which ends with a cliffhanger that will keep reluctant readers involved. This is the first in the "Galaxy X" trilogy.
