VOYA - Voya Reviews
This attractive set serves as a companion to the Gale Encyclopedia of Multicultural America, 2 nd ed., (2000). According to the preface, Primary Documents includes primary source material for all groups described in the encyclopedia, ranging from fifteen representative Native American tribes to European Americans and more recent arrivals, such as the Vietnamese and Cambodians. Documents include oral histories, personal narratives, statutes, recipes, and political cartoons, selected to reflect each group's experience in this country. Readers will note the omission of many of the more commonly requested documents, such as Martin Luther King Jr.'s "I Have a Dream" speech, Sojourner Truth's "Ain't I a Woman?" or Chief Seattle's famous words. Presumably the editors felt these were readily available elsewhere, although including them would have made this set a more comprehensive reference value for small libraries. Recent African immigrant groups are notably underrepresented. The preface to the first encyclopedia states that most of these designated themselves in the 1990 census as "African-American," and therefore are included under that heading. Documents in that section, however, deal primarily with the civil rights struggle and do not reflect the experience of recent immigrants from much of the continent, with the exception of Nigerians, Eritreans, and Egyptians. This set makes for interesting browsing and may have reference value for those owning the original encyclopedia. For most libraries, however, the price alone will make it an optional purchase. Vol. 2, Index. Illus. Photos. 1999, Gale, Ages 12 to Adult, 820p. in 2 vols. PLB $145/set. Reviewer: Kathleen Beck
