Galego Language Normativization

Overview

Overview

Galego language normativization has experienced challenges to achieve a normative equilibrium due to a continuing sociolinguistic debate. The Real Academia Galega (or, the Academy) is the official language normativizing institution. Despite a so-called collaborative effort in normativizing Galego between the Academy and the Instituto da Lingua Galega (or, the Institute), the integrity and expertise of the Academy have been shadowed by the Institute. Although both the Academy and the Institute have mutually published the current official norm, Normas ortograficas e morfoloxicas do idioma galego (2003), their collaborative efforts in Galego language standardization, are questioned and analyzed in this dissertation. My analysis reveals that despite the official status of the Academy to normativize Galego, the Institute is the actual normativizing institution; the Academy serves as a symbolic institution that has assisted in the prestigious research of Galego literary and cultural studies. In addition, this demonstrative study discusses the history and current challenges and efforts of language normativization in Galicia and the sociolinguistic debate surrounding normative efforts. Through research gathered from personal interviews and in situ investigations, I also introduce the current politics involved in Galego corpus language planning. This dissertation concludes with suggestions for greater success in corpus language planning in Galicia.
