Overview

Galen Rowell was the archetypal adventure photographer, his iconic images published in leading magazines and scores of books, exhibited in major galleries, and cherished by fans ranging from the Dalai Lama to news anchor Tom Brokaw. When he and his wife and business partner, Barbara Cushman Rowell, perished in a small-plane crash in 2002, he had just completed a landmark assignment for National Geographic and had begun making stunning new images of his favorite old haunts in the Sierra Nevada. This highly acclaimed volume includes more than 175 images representing all phases and dimensions of Rowell’s singular career, chosen by the editors with whom he worked most closely, overseen by his family and studio colleagues, and reproduced to the highest standards of lithography from digital masters of his 35mm frames. Complementing and illuminating the pictures are essays and commentaries by Rowell’s friends and associates from the worlds of mountaineering, conservation, photography, and publishing, along with an in-depth biographical introduction by Robert Roper and an appreciation of his work by photography critic Andy Grundberg.

Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble
Ansel Adams believed that Galen Rowell (1940-2002) was his most likely successor as a nature photographer. Rowell and his wife died in a small plane crash not far from his Colorado home, but he left behind a huge archive of meticulously organized, often breathtaking photographs. This major retrospective book, which contains more than 175 photos, provides the missing overview of his incredibly busy and productive life.

A wonderful tribute to one of the greatest photographers and adventurers of all time

Galen Rowell was that one in a million combination photographer, adventurer, pilot and mountain climber. He traveled the world in search of that perfect photograph and captured it time and again. Galen's physical abilities placed him in locations to capture photographs the main stream of society can only imagine. He was unquestionably one of the most talented photographers of his day and combined this with his love of adventure. Combining Galen's skills as a world class photographer and adventurer created some of the most fantastic photographs you can imagine. Galen took his love of the outdoors, added photography and built a reputation as one of the greatest photographers ever. The book is filled with an abundance of facts about Galen's life, it is also filled with some of the most stunning photographs you will ever find. Galen lived life to the fullest, captured nature's beauty in the process and saved it on film for all to see. Looking at the images Galen left us with makes me look forward to packing my camera in a backpack and hiking to a remote natural setting. It has inspired me to try to take better photographs. We can't all go to the Himalayas in Pakistan or Chang Tang Plateau in Tibet, but we can be inspired by Galen to capture nature wherever we find it.
