My son's read this book, one is not an athletic kid, the other loves sports and is very familiar with the ins and outs of the games. Both boys thought it was a great read, easy to understand and helpful. Would recommend this book to help you as a parent keep up with the sports talk and also for kids wanting to understand better. Was this review helpful? Yes NoThank you for your feedback. Baseball is an extremely popular sport with a large following; from T-ball to Major League, the stands are filled with cheering fans. Former sports writer Suzy Beamer Bohnert explains the game in easy to understand terms. In her book "Game Day Goddess: Learning Baseball’s Lingo" Ms Bohnert addressed women and their need to understand the game. This book "Game-Day Youth: Learning Baseball’s Lingo" is focused on youth. Bohnert shares a brief lesson on the history of sport. Alexander Cartwright is thought to be the father of baseball, in the 1840s. From there Bohnert moves to the basics: there are nine innings, each team gets three outs per inning, and the team with the most runs at the end of the game wins. She describes the baseball field and equipment: there are three bases, 90 feet apart, and there is an outfield and an infield. A baseball is made if cork covered in cowhide and the bat can be wood or aluminum. She continues on discussing the uniforms, players and positions.
Suzy Beamer Bohnert obviously knows the sport of baseball and I would surmise she dearly loves it. She explains the basics in simple terms. She defines terms you will hear at games. I like the diagrams of the players' positions and the field; it helped in making the concept more understandable. This book should be in every school library. It is hard to find quality books that boys will read. While this book is suitable for both males and females I can certainly see it appealing to males. It is a high interest book that could spark interest in reading as well as to help with their baseball game. Well done Ms Bohnert.
