Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Shirley Nelson
This book from "The Essential Library" provides guidance for young boys who participate in sports as they move from community teams to more competitive teams in middle school. The author and the consultant Dr. Robyn Silverman each provide summation with problem-solving guidelines at the end of each chapter. The ten chapters address common issues that face young athletes, from dealing with living up to parental expectations to displaying good sportsmanship. Each chapter includes a scenario in which a young boy faces a dilemma. Victor is embarrassed by his father's behavior at games as he yells at coaches, referees, and other players. Marco's teammates think he receives special treatment since his father is the coach. Dominick is encouraged by other players to bulk up with steroids. Vinnie's health is compromised when he is told to gain weight by his football coach and to lose weight by his wrestling coach. These and other stories are presented, but the problems are not solved. The reader is given questions to help in determining the best resolution. Photographs, a list of additional resources, and a glossary are also helpful. Reviewer: Shirley Nelson
