Florence Scovel Shinn, born September 24, 1871, in Camden, New Jersey and died October 17, 1940. She was an American artist and book illustrator who became a New Thought spiritual teacher, metaphysical writer, and one of the first motivational writers of her time. She was educated in Philadelphia where she attended the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and there she met her future husband, the artist Everett Shinn (1876-1953). After getting married, they moved into a studio apartment at Waverly Place, near Washington Square, New York. Everett built a theatre next door, and wrote three plays in which Florence played a leading role. Everett Shinn became known as a member of the Ashcan School of Art, and Florence worked as an illustrator. They got divorced in 1912. Her metaphysical works began with her self-published book (The Game of Life and How to Play it) in 1925. Your Word is Your Wand was published in 1928 and The Secret Door to Success in 1940. 'The Game of Life and How to Play it' is one of her most influential book, and includes quotes from the Bible and anecdotal explanations of the author's understanding of God and man. Her philosophy centers on the power of positive thought and usually includes instructions for verbal or physical affirmation. Shinn expressed her philosophy as: The invisible forces are ever working for man who is always 'pulling the strings' himself, though he does not know it. Owing to the vibratory power of words, whatever man voices, he begins to attract.
The Game of Lifeby Florence Scovel Shinn, Henderson Daniel (Designed by)
Most people consider life a battle, but it is not a battle, it is a game. However it is a game, which cannot be played successfully without the knowledge of spiritual law. The Old and the New Testaments give the rules of the game with wonderful clearness. Jesus Christ taught that it was a great game of Giving and Receiving. Whatsoever a man soweth that shall he also reap." This means that whatever man sends out in word or deed, will return to him; what he gives, he will receive. Nothing stands between man and his highest ideals and every desire of his heart, but doubt and fear. When man can "wish without worrying," every desire will be instantly fulfilled. The invisible forces are ever working for man who is always 'pulling the strings' himself, though he does not know it. Owing to the vibratory power of words, whatever man voices, he begins to attract.

i love this book! of all the times i've heard about this topic, this is the first time anyone explained that this power is God. Perhaps our society has become so concerned with political correctness that we are afraid to talk about God. In 1925 when this was written, it was a different story i guess. It makes so much more sense to me the way the concepts and laws are presented in this book. I'm so excited to share that before i even finished reading it, a startling demonstration presented! Whether you consider yourself spiritual or not, i believe you will enjoy this read and benefit if you respect the law and practice the methods. The only reason i didn't give it a 5 rating is because there are two sections and they are redundant. i'm not clear on the reason for that, but i needed to hear much of it twice anyway to absord it all.
