Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal
Gr 6-9-When the Barton High School football team's coach is injured in a car accident, the student manager is asked to fill in for the last game of the season. Beano Hatton is a stereotypical nerd, unathletic but intelligent. All of a sudden, he must command the respect and trust of the team members who have virtually ignored him for the last three years. The notion of a student manager being made acting coach is ridiculous. Dygard only halfheartedly tries to explain why no adults can substitute for the man. Even worse, he dismisses the female basketball coach from consideration solely because she is a woman. Even if readers accept the far-fetched premise, Beano's obligatory moments of self-doubt are unconvincing. By the time the game has ended, he comes off as the greatest coach since Knute Rockne. He doesn't make a mistake all game, and every one of his ideas is a resounding success, resulting in the inevitable victory. A bland, formulaic book that bogs down even further during an unbearably boring game sequence.- George Delalis, Oakland Public Library, CA

Game Plan is a story of a football team that needed a coach. They ask a boy named Beano to be a manager of the football team, and Beano says yes. They have a good quarterback and his name is Marty. Beano has to be the manager for Barton High Tiger¿s because Coach Pritchett the Barton is in the Barton Memorial Hospital and in critical condition. Beano becomes the manager and set Barton High Football Team back in business. Thomas J. Dygard has terrific characters in the book Game Plan that reaches to the reader¿s heart. The team of Barton High is struggling because Marty has left the team. Before Marty leaves the team, he was first string quarterback for Barton High. Marty leaves because he can¿t tell the plays and make the plays up. He thought he could since he is the quarterback. In this book of Game Plan, it is about a football team who needs a coach. They find Beano who turns out to be the manager of the football team. On the football team, the reader will find out the quarterbacks name is Marty, and he thinks he can make the plays by himself. Marty leaves the team because he cannot make his own plays. In this book, the author gives a description of the characters and the book touches the reader¿s heart.

    Keep going or give up?

When the Tigers starting QB quits the team and the tigers have to get a QB that has only had six snaps the whole season the coach thinks the team does not have a chance He talks to the team and they get a game plan. The setting is on a football field. I think this book could be a five star book if there was a little bit more action and drama. The theme of the book is football and about what it takes to learn to be a good coach.
