Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Hazel Buys
A recent addition to the lexicon of behavioral psychology is the dark side of video gaming, called a "soft" addiction. Like all addictive behaviors, it can replace important activities, interfere with relationships, and derail productive lifestyles. The addicted is running in place, getting nowhere. Written in a teen-friendly tone and illustrated with graphics suggestive of the games in question, in sections labeled "The Rebel," "The Escape Artist," and "The Friend," the author presents situations and conflicts familiar to anyone grappling with addiction or trying to help someone whose gaming is getting out of hand. The benefits of learning to play video games are acknowledged, as is the downside of spending too much time on gaming. Symptoms and warning signs are presented in short scenarios in comic book style, quizzes, and advice-column formats. The reader is asked to evaluate the situation and choose among possible solutions. Sample questions and answers are presented in contrasting side-bars labeled "Dear Dr. Shrink-Wrapped...." A side-bar titled "Did You Know?" lists recent facts about gaming concerns. This book, a part of the "Deal With It" series, concludes with a list of help lines, web sites and books, labeled "More Help" and would be a good addition to a middle school or high school class on health, social relations, or psychology.
