Overview

Mohandas Gandhi grew up in India at a time when it was ruled by a foreign power—Great Britain. Gandhi fought against the injustice of British people by leading peaceful marches and protests. It's refreshing to find a Gandhi biography written for young readers from a distinctly Indian perspective. In thirty-two pages, Mitchell manages to convey the complex energy of the enigmatic man who took on the Empire and led a nation to its freedom. Some aspects of Gandhi's life, such as his childhood marriage, or his responses to Hindu-Muslim conflicts, have been rushed or glossed over because of space constraints, and in those paragraphs an adult narrative voice is unfortunately in evidence. But on the whole this is a worthy addition to the reference shelf. Mitra's watercolors are clearly inspired by archival photographs of Gandhi. The author covers Gandhi's entire life, with emphasis on his profound belief that standing up against unfair laws and practices could be done through peaceful means. For Gandhi, this meant great personal sacrifice: fasting to near death, 2,089 days in prisons, and, eventually, his assassination.
