The Ganges

The Ganges

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
The Ganges River flows from an ice field high up in the Himalayas. We see both its small beginnings and its later vastness in bright photos that compliment the text. Extensive information about the holiness of the river in particular and Hinduism in general is presented in very readable text with many small boxes of additional information (holy cows, gods and goddesses). There are seven great rivers in India believed to be holy and the holiest of all is the Ganges. Hindus make pilgrimages to the river and often want their ashes spread over the river after they die. The book includes religious legends, explanations of shrines and ceremonies in Hindu homes as well as holidays and special events. This series celebrates diversity, offering an opportunity for the classroom teacher and individual students to share information about different faiths and ethnic groups. A short but thorough glossary and an easy-to-use index will help students just learning to use nonfiction books for research. Other titles in the "Holy Places" series visit Bodh Gaya, the Golden Temple, the Vatican and the Western Wall. 2003, Raintree,
