Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal
Gr 4 UpBefore he landed in prison, Tookie Williams was an active gang leader in South Central L.A. and was seriously wounded by gunfire. In this series, he encourages readers to learn from his mistakes and his experiences in gang life. In simple, straightforward language, the young man describes why and how he became involved, what his life was like as a gang member, and how it led him further and further from the likelihood of a productive future. Each double-page spread features large print on glossy paper with lots of white space and a full-page color photograph. The pictures are generally of good to excellent quality. A good deal of background information is repeated from book to book and students may be turned off by the didactic, second-person treatment. Still, these titles have an important message and probably an audienceperhaps intermediate students, particularly reluctant readers, who have a need for a dose of reality on this topic.Rosie Peasley, Empire Union School District, Modesto, CA

Can Stop & Will Stop Staying Stuck On Stupid

Tookie has steped up like it or not and tackled a subject that educators and others have and can not. There are few worthy works on this subject. You have ex-cons and felons that glorify this life style and enlist ghost writers to repeat their inflated tall tales while saying absolutley nothing. Tookie is diffrent man. He could have done all that and it all would have been true. Tookie is honest and he has never done that. In these books his message is clear and it is this simple,'this is not the way to go.' ( Last poster, what do you know about growing up in enviroments where your choices are: A) either you/them or me/us or B) them before they get me/us. You have no clue of life in these combat zones.) Tookie has appologized for all his sins and spent the rest of his remaining days trying to do good and make a diffrence. You can throw stones at that if you want, me? I applaud this book, his entire book series and the later end of his life for his good works. In the final anaylasis it is never how you start, it's how you end. I pray this is not the end for Tookie. There were no books for me when I was fighting, set tripin', and risking my life for a neigboorhood I did't own one fricken' brick in. Tookie knows too, we are all twisted like this and it is way beyond a black or latino issue now. Not anymore, this is everyones issue now, including those straight fresh off the boat.
