Gangsters on the Grand Atlantic written by Sarah Masters Buckey is great proof that American Girl easily succeeds with four-star and five-star mystery books. Gangsters on the Grand Atlantic takes place in the 1920's when gangsters were at large in the USA, thus befitting the name. It was a time, when different fashions for girls and were at large, and people snuck in bootleg beer into speakasies, thus mentioned in the book. Emily Scott is growing up during this time with her older sister and mother. Her older sister, Dorothy, who is a flapper, takes Emily on a vacation with her to a luxurious hotel. At the hotel, however, Emily's excitement turns into fear when she spots Mr. M, an evil gangster from the city where she lives. Scared that he might mean harm or something against the law, Emily decides to investigate. Emily makes a friend on the way who helps her to solve the mystery and figure out what Mr. M. is really up to. However, the clues Emily and her new friend discover lead Emily to find out that Dorothy might be in danger, because of Dorothy's boyfriend, Frank, who seems to owe the Mr. m. something. Determined to protect her sister and her sister's friends, Emily tries to piece everything together, clue by clue. But this might lead to fatal danger for Emily and her loved ones, especially when facing the most infamous gangster in the city. I think this book is the perfect mystery for the setting, and Sarah masters Buckey has once again successfully written another book that shows her skill at true mystery writing. This book is a promising tale of mystery, the importance of family and friends, drama, and growing up in the 1920's. I recommend this book to any girl who is in love with American Girl, AG's History Mysteries( the series this book is a part of), the Roaring Twenties, mystery, drama, and growing up. This book is for you, for it is a grand book, once again befitting the name. I hope you like this book as much as I did!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Gangsters at the Grand Atlantic is and exciting mystery by Sarah Masters Buckey. The story takes place in the year 1925. Emily Scott, a twelve year old girl, witnesses an attack by gangsters on her landlord Mr. Florio. The gangsters tell her she better watch out or the leader of their gang, Mr. M, would be coming for her. Meanwhile, Emily¿s older sister Dorothy gets invited on vacation by her friend Bitsy to Jersey Shore. Concerned for Emily¿s safety after the witness of Mr. Florio¿s attack, Emily¿s mother asks Dorothy if Emily can join her on the trip. Soon after Emily is being whisked away to a very fancy hotel on Jersey Shore. While Dorothy is enjoying time with her friends Bitsy, Frank, and Chadwick, Emily notices a strange man at their hotel. Emily suspects the man is Mr. M. She gets very worried that Mr. M may be at Jersey Shore to make sure she doesn¿t tell anyone about the attack on Mr. Florio. Because Dorothy is too busy to help Emily, Emily makes friends with Gwen, a disabled girl who is always at the hotel because her mother works there. The two of them investigate Mr. M and why he is at the hotel. They find out he is a gangster who sells illegal rum and liquor. They eventually get Mr. M and the rest of his gang arrested after going through some hard and scary conflicts. I really liked this book. It was very exciting and suspenseful. I never got bored reading this book. There was always something new and exciting happening in every chapter. I couldn¿t keep the book down. The author Sarah Masters Buckey, did a wonderful job describing the setting of Jersey Shore. I felt like I was really there. She also did a great job describing the characters. I felt like I knew each of them personally. I really like the History Mystery series, but this book is one of my favorites.
