Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Greg M. Romaneck
Crime represents evil action that in many ways is repulsive but which also draws our attention to it if only to understand how people can act the way they sometimes do. In Gangsters, Bootlegger, and Bandits author Schwartz tells the stories of a handful of the law breakers who made a living in organized crime during the twentieth century. Among the rogues gallery featured in this chapter in the illustrated "Shock Zone Villains" series are Al Capone, John Gotti, Bonnie and Clyde, Baby Face Nelsen, and Lucky Luciano. In each instance, Schwartz does a fine job of encapsulating the mobster's life in a fairly concise biographical sketch. Each of these mini-biographies features keynote events that helped make the person in question infamous. In all instances fascinating elements of the criminal's behavior are included that help bring the subject to life. For example, for years Vincent "The Chin" Gigante, the head of the notorious New York City based Genovese mafia family, pretended to be mentally ill. Gigante could be seen shuffling along on foot in his neighborhood dressed in a bathrobe and mumbling to himself. In reality, this behavior was a ruse designed to "beat the rap" he was facing under the auspices of an insanity plea. In the end Gigante's gamesmanship failed and he went to prison. It is this type of storytelling that makes this a book that will appeal in an edgy fashion to readers who are in any way interested in crime stories. Reviewer: Greg M. Romaneck
