Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Joyce Rice
Sam and Mabel are garbage collectors for the neighborhood. Sam picks up the garbage from the curb while Mabel drives the truck. All the people on Sam and Mabel's route are their friends, and they have taught their friends about garbage collecting. They have also helped them to learn about recycling and reusing some of the things they might otherwise throw away. The illustrations and the simple story will delight even very young children. Older readers will be able to discuss recycling and responsibility-several of the issues in the story. Garbage Collectors is a treasure for classrooms where recycling is emphasized. Other titles in this "In My Neighborhood" series introduce readers to firefighters, police officers and postal workers.
Children's Literature - Trina Heidt
Most people don't realize what an important job it is, but children will be fascinated with the in-depth yet easy to understand look at the everyday duties of garbage collectors. Entertaining illustrations and straightforward, informative text make this an excellent resource for those teaching very young children about the everyday world. It is part of the "In My Neighborhood" series.
School Library Journal - School Library Journal
PreS-Gr 3A book that applauds the work of garbage collectors, showing young readers the importance of this job. Sam, who picks up the trash, and Mabel, who drives the truck, are smiling and friendly to the children and adults of the neighborhood. The text focuses on several main concepts and outlines the problems that garbage creates. The process that it passes through from the can out on the street to the dump is described in an easy-to-understand format. The three R's of recycling (reduce, reuse, and recycle) are explained and illustrated with examples to which children can relate. The importance of safe disposal of hazardous waste is touched upon. The idea that the garbage we all create doesn't just disappear, but needs to be dealt with in an appropriate manner comes through on every page. New vocabulary is easily understood in context. A good choice for units on recycling, introducing jobs and careers, and community helpers.Stephani Hutchinson, Pioneer Elementary School, Sunnyside, WA
Kirkus Reviews
In an entry in the In My Neighborhood series, garbage collectors Sam and Mabel answer children's questions about their work as they complete their daily route. It's no simple pick-up; readers will be surprised to learn how garbage is separated for recycling, taken to a transfer station, and compacted for storage in landfills. A discussion of the three RsþReduce, Reuse, and Recycleþemphasizes the role that children can play in caring for the environment and gives simple examples of conservation efforts. Cartoon-like illustrations, several offering a wide-angle overhead perspective of Sam and Mabel's truck as it rolls along its route, add a humorous touch to a serious topic. This is an informative yet light-handed treatment of the important job of workers who make daily contributions to community health and safety. (Picture book. 3-7)
