Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
There's no help for it: One of the Forsythe sisters must find a rich husband and save the family from poverty. So when a chance invitation from the Duchess of Carlisle lands them at a house party at a charming country estate, they know that this is their chance. But their plans go awry. A botanically minded duke who wants to be loved for himself, a sympathetic but stubbornly mercenary heroine, and a cast of enjoyable secondary characters (in particular, the enigmatic MacDougal) keep the pages turning. This well-written Regency provides an interesting perspective on love, money, and security. Hern (A Change of Heart, 1995) lives in San Francisco, California.

    My Third book

This is the third book I've read, in the last month by Ms. Hern. Ms. Hern always writes a good story, with lots of adventure, history and romance to keep you from page one to the end.

I loved this story. Candice Hern as always did a great job. This story introduces Catherine and Susannah Farsythe twenty and twenty-two years of age along with their aunt are poor. Their father gambled and bad investments their money away. Their aunt Hetty is friends with the Duchess of Carlisle and are invited to attend a house party for several weeks. Although Catherine is the youngest she is the smarter one who manages the house hold and money, decides this will be just the thing for them to meet rich husbands. She holds high hopes on her sister who is true beauty but wears glasses and is not as bright as Catherine. At the party Susannah falls in love with a military man who is a steward for the Cartisle estate. Stephen the Duke of Cartisle does not like parties he prefers to work on his projects but without realizing he falls in love with Catherine who thinks he is the gardener. She fights her feeling because she does not want to be poor anf the Stephen wants her to love him for who he is not his wealth. At the end she declares her love for the gardener and at the ball Stephen announces his oncoming marriage to Catherine who is shock she faints. A story I read this story twice.

    Amazing once again

I am so addicted to romance books especially when there is a Duke involved. Ms. Hern has done it again. Such an amazing read. It is a wonderful book to curl up with anytime.

    true love

I loved this book mainly because the heroine fell in love with the duke thinking he was "only" a gardener and struggled with it, mostly because she and her sister and aunt were about to starve if they didn't marry well. It took the duke a while to reconcile himself to her looking for the biggest fortune she could get, but true love won out.

And that's what counts, isn't it?

    Delightful Regency Romance

A penniless young miss at a duchess' house party finds herself conflicted between an earl who can offer her the security she desperately desires and a man she believes is the estate head gardener, but is really the duke intent on finding someone to love him for himself and not his title. This charming regency romp was just as much fun to re-read as an e-book. I laughed. I cried. You just can't ask for much more from a romance.

    Just Wonderful

This ones my favorite. I love mistaken identities and they are really hard to pull off, but this one works.
Very enjoyable and I love the covers. It makes me wish I have been born then so that it could be experienced first hand instead of through a book.

    Terrific Regency romp

This is such a delightful book, both funny and moving. I had to laugh at the hero skulking outside his own home, peeking through the box hedges. And the heroine's fear of poverty felt genuine and put a credible spin on the fortune hunter premise. I also feel in love with the gardens, which were so beautifully described. Another winner from Ms. Hern, and another gorgeous new cover.

    One of the best

I am so glad to see this book available again. It's one of the best traditional Regencies I've ever read. The new cover makes it even better.
