Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
Jencks and his late spouse, Maggie Keswick, created the first true garden of the 21st century in Scotland at their Portrack home. Encompassing landscape, sculpture, flowers and trees, and paths, it is an amazing adventure into time, space, and life; the likes of Francis Crick, Werner Heisenberg, Subrahmanyan Chandrasekhar, and any other recent scientific deity would find it welcoming. Any garden might look spectacular in the summer, but few look stunning in the depths of winter, as this one does. The book itself sets a new standard for production with its exceptional beauty. In eight parts, Jencks explains the gestation of this locale and its meaning on an altogether different plane from any other garden on the planet. Jencks has certainly challenged landscape architects in this work to think in altogether different (and less local) ways in their art. How will they respond to this garden and its all-encompassing perspective? Only time will tell. In the meantime, if you can't rush off to Scotland, buy this book. It certainly is the most important landscape architecture document of the year.-Edward J. Valauskas, Lib. & Plant Info. Office, Chicago Botanic Garden Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information.
