The work (largely autobiographical) tells about the tragic fate of the family of the village blacksmith Yakov Chumak, in particular, his youngest son Andrii, about how people preserved their dignity on the edge of life and death. "The Garden of Gethsemane" is one of the first works in world literature in which the crimes of the Stalinist regime were exposed from the position of a participant in the events. The action of the work unfolds in Kharkiv, in prisons on Radnarkomivska and Kholodnaya Gora. All names and surnames of prisoners and employees of the NKVD in this book are true.
