Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
Part of a reference series from Royal Horticultural Society experts, this book emphasizes the causes of gardening problems and recommends preventive measures. Pest and disease conundrums inevitably emerge in even the best gardens, and Ward spends the majority of the book explaining specific problems of common plants and presenting various methods of control, including both organic and chemical remedies. Divided into sections on ornamentals, vegetables, and fruits, the work touches on greenhouse problems and includes a chapter devoted to weeds. Along with the index, an unusually detailed table of contents makes finding the entry for a specific plant relatively easy. In addition to color photographs, there are charming color illustrations reminiscent of old-fashioned botanical prints, which sets Ward's book apart from the textbook-like layout found in David Deardorff and Kathryn Wadsworth's excellent What's Wrong With My Vegetable Garden? and What's Wrong With My Plant?, both of which mainly address organic gardening. VERDICT Many gardening books include basic information on the most common problems, but serious gardeners eventually need a detailed book like this, dedicated to prevention and troubleshooting. Recommended.—Bonnie Poquette, Milwaukee
