Library Journal
In this book from the American Horticultural Society, garden lovers have a handy directory to nearly 2000 gardens across the eastern United States, something to tuck away in the car or carry along on a trip. Spencer, a lawyer turned preservationist, and Russell, a former publishing executive, have organized the text alphabetically by state; each section starts with a map of a given state and the locations of cities with gardens (large cities like Chicago with many gardens earn their own map). Garden entries then follow alphabetically, with the address, telephone numbers, ever-important web site(s), fees, activities, and brief descriptions of facilities provided. This information will certainly help tourists and travelers make a decision to stop at a given garden, although they will probably need to consult the Internet for more exact driving directions. As there are no See also references, readers must also guess (or know) that the Chicago Botanic Garden, for instance, is not in Chicago but in Glencoe, IL. Still, this work acts as a nice supplement to Princeton Architectural Press's "Garden Lover's Guide" series. For any library with a strong interest in gardening or horticulture, this book is required for your reference collection.-Edward J. Valauskas, Graduate SLIS, Dominican Univ., River Forest, IL Copyright 2005 Reed Business Information.
