Overview

Open a garden gate in Santa Fe and chances are you'll find a provocative display of flowers and trees, carefully selected stones and bird feeders. Gardens of Santa Fe brings many of these well-loved but secluded gardens to the public eye for the first time, as well as highlighting some of the more spectacular public gardens in the area. Author Anne Hillerman deftly introduces these resplendent gardens and the people who find joy in tending them.

Take a visual journey through some of the most memorable and luminous gardens the city has to offer. Santa Fe boasts an astonishing diversity of flora, from traditional succulents and drought-resistant plants to roses and fruit trees all grown in the high-desert mountains of Santa Fe.

Dramatic, eye-catching photographs by Don Strel showcase the beauty of these flowers in their glorious natural settings. Plus, Hillerman shares insights on how to turn your own garden into a bountiful oasis in the desert.

During more than twenty years as a journalist, Anne Hillerman has worked as editorial page and arts editor for the Albuquerque Journal North and the Santa Fe New Mexican. Her other books include The Insiders Guide to Santa Fe, Children's Guide to Santa Fe, Done in the Sun, and Ride the Wind: USA to Africa. She is currently a director of Wordharvest Writers Workshops and the Tony Hillerman Writers Conference: Focus on Mystery, both of which she helped to establish in 2001.

Photographer Don Strel's photos have been featured in The Insiders Guide to Santa Fe, Children's Guide to Santa Fe, New Mexico Magazine, the Los Angeles Times, the Albuquerque Journal, the Santa Fe New Mexican, and numerous other publications. He is the director of Southwest Assignments design and photo agency, which he founded in 1985.

From stately cottonwoods to fragrant sage and gray-leafed chamisa, Santa Fe’s roadsides, medians, and patios reflect the constraints and abundance of the natural four-seasons environment. The city's older adobe architecture lends itself to displaying blossoms. You'll find beauty, both subtle and dramatic, at almost every turn.
