This being my first taste of Bernhard's work, it's safe to say that I was caught unaware: this is a Monster of novel! I'm not referring to the length of the book either... but the 100+ page monologue of insane rambling and ranting has to be one of the most difficult passages I've ever read. Not to say it isn't worth it, however, as Bernhard posseses uncanny insight into the unstable mind, and he manages to express this in an astounding way. But for more than just the monologue, "Gargoyles" is worth reading for the unique characters and situations presented. While certainly not for everyone (and certainly not "light" reading), anyone with a taste for experimental writing (or exotic fiction as I like to call it) should take the time to discover Bernhard's "Gargoyles".Was this review helpful?
