Garifuna Music: Field Recordings from Belize

Editorial Reviews

All Music Guide - Adam Greenberg
Culled from a few relatively recent outings to Belize by ethnomusicologist David Whitmer, this compilation takes a stab at collecting some of the sounds of the Garifuna peoples of Belize that are more traditional than the expanding Punta rock that's making its way through world music circles today. Luckily for the album, the drum pieces are the most energetic and exciting of the Garifuna repertoire. The various rhythms (six major ones and their variants) are all represented by a work or two here, performed by able players from the troupes and streets of Dangriga, Punta Gorda, and Barranco. A nice album of sophisticated drum rhythms and call and response singing, with a little something for everyone who prefers to remain on the high end of the tempo spectrum.
