Set in late colonial Indonesia in 1910, Garlands of Moonlight relates the story of a village ravaged by the dual threats of modernity and an ancient, supernatural evil. The traveling herbalist Marsiti is at the center of the conflict, helped (but mostly hindered) by Hidayat, the village's rational, no-nonsense schoolteacher.

The book's high production values, including the use of special formulations of black and silver inks and the use of high-definition stochastic (FM) printing technology, mimic the quaint feel of a collection of turn-of-the-century daguerreotype photographs.

    Eerie and Beautiful!

One can't help but be drawn in by the compelling story Sen has put together, accentuated by the skilfully executed black and white illustrations. The atmosphere is tinged with the darkness that stalks the entire village, and the reader can feel it! I was almost sorry when I turned the last page...

    Not your average manga...

When most people think manga they picture Gundam, Sailor Moon, Dragonball Z, among others. While Garlands of Moonlight may not have any giant robots and epic battles, what it does have a spooky and intriguing story that is as unique as the book itself. The book is like a sideways paperback, and the silver ink that flows through the pages creates an ethereal feel. This shimmering, dream-like atmosphere helps set the mood for this spooky tale. It starts off slow letting you get a feel for the characters and the situation in this small, poor village, then quickly drags you into a frightening and gruesome folk/fairy tale where the monsters are all too real. If you enjoy folk tales or dark fairy tales, or just enjoy a well told story with some beautiful artwork, I highly recommend this book.
