Overview

Garrett Eckbo (1910-2000) played a central role in the formulation and practice of modern landscape architecture, with an active career that spanned over five decades. In each design Eckbo integrated aesthetic ideas and social values - an involvement with social betterment that informed his landscape designs for Farm Security Administration migrant worker camps, gardens, and planned residential communities, as well as his writings. As author, and later, professor and chair of the Department of Landscape Architecture at the University of California at Berkeley, Eckbo gathered vast professional experience and influenced the course of environmental design in the twentieth century.
