Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
In Gaspard and Lisa's Rainy Day, the first of two new titles by Anne Gutman, illus. by Georg Hallensleben, the pair's quest for fun things to do indoors lands them in hot water; and Lisa adopts a hilarious attitude to her family's new addition ("My best friend, Gaspard, promised me that he would never talk to the baby. And we could pretend that it didn't exist") in Lisa's Baby Sister.
Children's Literature
The dog characters will be familiar to those parents and children who have read others in the series, "The Misadventures of Gaspard and Lisa." In this episode we find them mischievously dealing with a day common to all parents and grandparents: a vacation at grandma's when it rains every day, keeping young children indoors. Trying to bake a cake, they mess up the kitchen and are sent to their room. Soon, they make a haunted room so that "The first person who enters will die of fright." Mom gets mad and sends them downstairs where they start a game with two tennis rackets. Dad gets mad, too, and suggests they "put a puzzle together like other children." Taking grandma's poster off the wall, they cut it into tiny pieces and tape it back together, replacing it on the wall but with one piece missing. At last, the sun comes out and saves the day. The text deals with the familiar issues of boredom, behavior, and friendship; the animal characters provide easy identification for young children. An excellent series for read-aloud time and beginning readers. 2003 (orig. 2001), Alfred A. Knopf/Borzoi Books/Random House,

PreS-Gr 1-In this addition to the series, the animal friends spend a rainy vacation day at Lisa's grandmother's house playing tennis in the dining room and otherwise getting into trouble. When her father tells them to put together a puzzle, they take a poster from the wall, cut it apart, and reassemble it with tape-except for a missing piece. After rehanging the incomplete picture, Gaspard fills in the space on the wall with a colored marker. The children are terrified that the adults will be angry, but are saved, at least for the moment, as the sun is now shining, and they all go outside. Hallensleben's glorious, textured paintings depict a cheery, cozy environment full of adventure and fun, and the bright illustrations perfectly capture the characters' enthusiasm and inquisitiveness. Children will giggle at the dogs' adventures.-Shawn Brommer, South Central Library System, Madison, WI Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information.
