Because the life of Bill Gates is indistinguishable from the history of the Microsoft Corporation he created in 1975, this is as much an industrial history as a biography of a ``smart guy'' whose work impacts everyone who works with a microcomputer. Writer/programmer Manes and Andrews, a columnist for the Seattle Times , provide refreshing disclosures on the source of their information and reveal the close cooperation of both Gates and other corporate insiders. Rich with detail, this book is thorough and not always laudatory of Gates. Much has been written on Gates, and most libraries owning James Wallace and Jim Erickson's Hard Drive ( LJ 6/1/92) will find that to be sufficient. A more than healthy dose of computer nerdism permeates this opus on Microsoft founder Bill Gates. So, even if you can distinguish a CD-ROM from OS/2, the "smart guy" jargon might set you dozing--in spite of the sharp, occasionally witty writing. In this unofficial yet somewhat sanctioned biography (Gates allowed access), two veteran reporters take off the rose-colored glasses to show the young tycoon at his best . . . and worst. Microsoft's disputatious culture and copycat product development strategy are well documented, as are the not-so-humble beginnings of Mr. Bill, his family, and his time at Harvard and the Albuquerque-based company MITS. This warts-and-all portrait of a businessman as a celebrity reveals Gates' temper, childishness, and disregard for employees, as well as his brilliance and work acumen.
