Gavin is an 11-year old boy who enjoys cooking. In conjunction with his grandparents, Greg and Liz Taylor, Gavin has created 9 “junior cookbooks” to date to show younger children how much fun cooking can be and how important it is to have an adult assist in the cooking process. His books stress safety and quality of ingredients, while involving the whole family in the process. Gavin knows these books will help to pay for his future education regardless of what career he chooses. Gavin is currently an avid computer game player, and is very good at it.

Gavin the Chef's Big Pizza is the sixth of nine Junior Cookbooks. It comprises a series of short narratives supported by actual photographs of the creation of one or more parts of a meal, and contains phases of that process, including, preparation, actual work and clean-up. The books were conceived and designed to provide young readers with steps of food preparation through actual photographs of Gavin cooking. Below each photograph is a narrative in large cartoon type that describes what he is doing, composed in his own words. He reviewed each picture and decided what he wanted to say about it.
The books were copyrighted to Gavin to enhance his pride, self-image and commitment to quality. Also he is aware that the income from these books goes toward his education, whether that turns out to be a college degree or a certificate from a chef’s school, possibly in Paris, or Rome. This is a wonderful way for his grandparents (Greg and Liz Taylor) to encourage, participate and assist in his future. Those grandparents are publishers and authors in their own right, so the progression was very natural and their names are on the cover with Gavin’s. Details are available through the classicaldoorway.com web site.
These books do not contain recipes, as in a standard cookbook; rather, they are an effort to inform, educate and entertain young people who enjoy food preparation or who are thinking about becoming a chef. Gavin was 7 years old, when he developed these books and they are designed for readers aged 7 and up. Now, at 11, he is considering more advanced cookbooks that actually contain measurements and more true recipe information. His efforts impressed his sister Ani enough that she is completing her first cookbook at 9 and has at least two more planned as Ani the Chef.
Emphasis is on adult supervision to ensure safety in all respects, including the quality of food. Ingredients used are "off-the-shelf" and brand names are visible, but no credits are provided. Adults are shown participating, and a family environment is clearly evident. These cookbooks are designed to share Gavin's efforts and the nine books to date are formatted in the same manner for consistency. Read with your child and enjoy the experience. Have fun!
