Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
Dawson, a freelance writer and former editor for PC Home Journal and Mac Home Journal, has compiled the first trade guide to lesbian and gay cyberspace. Focusing primarily on the World Wide Web, the guide consists of chapters on a wide range of topics, each containing several breezily written paragraphs followed by a long list of Uniform Resource Locators (URLs). As such the book reads more like a hot list than a guide-a format better suited to a web page, where users can simply click to go to the featured site. Annotations would have served the print format better. Currency is a problem facing any book on the Internet, and this title is no exception: Several of the sites mentioned have already disappeared or changed addresses in the few months since publication. More comprehensive and up-to-date information on lesbian and gay Internet resources can be identified using such queer-oriented search facilities as the Rainbow Query at GL WEB .-Ellen Greenblatt, SUNY, Buffalo

Top sites are described and many others are listed, in chapters spanning the breadth of queer culture, from activism to sex to queer families. Check out the Fat Girl page, "for fat dykes and the women who want them," ponder photos of dirty socks by a fetishist, read about Queer Skinheads, an emerging sub-sub-culture, and get home in time to meet a nun whose collection of AIDS information is larger than the one at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. "An indispensable tool for Net 'newbies' who may need guidance in the digital domain... could cause information junkies to log on for interminable hours," wrote The Washington Blade

about Gay & Lesbian Online. And the Windy City Times calls it "an indispensable and entertaining guide." Explosive and constantly changing, the World Wide Web is almost unchartable, and all people who try had better know their stuff and be prepared to update regularly.

Fortunately, Jeff Dawson is a man who knows the territory, and in a lively, easy-to-read style, he plays tour guide in this newly updated edition of his best-selling guide, pointing out both new and long-term online resources for AIDS, activism, bears, books, chat rooms, dating, domestic partners, gardening, legal issues, movies, politics, religion and spirituality, sex, television, 'zines, and beyond. The sites visited range from the practical, such as disability advice, to the silly, such as how to wear stiletto heels on formal occasions.

Encyclopedic in scope, this book charts the entire spectrum of gay and lesbian interests as found in the ever-growing digital world of the Internet. Join the exploding queer presence in cyberspace in this user-friendly, incredibly detailed, and enormously entertaining manual for people at all levels of computer skills.
