Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble
The Barnes & Noble Review
Seven years ago, Jack Hart made a huge splash on the gay circuit with the nonjudgmental, clever, intelligent guide to sexual relations between men, simply titled, appropriately enough, Gay Sex. Hart covered a wide range of subject matter that included everything you've ever even remotely thought about doing — and plenty you probably hadn't. Mixing wit and common sense, he gave gay men dead-on advice about such topics as alcohol, AIDS, alternatives to the bars, appearance, anal sex, and age differences — and that's just the A's!

AIDS, the Web, and the media have drastically reshaped our lives this decade, and most of Hart's revisions and additions to his perennial bestseller speak to these changes. This new Gay Sex retains most of the information from the first edition, but also wisely includes a plethora of web site addresses to give you further information on whatever particular topic floats your boat, essentially making Gay Sex, along with its many other merits, a giant reference tool for online information.

What makes Gay Sex such an essential resource is that it covers every possible aspect of gay sexual behavior, frankly addresses concerns, actions, and consequences, and offers straightforward advice without a hint of judgment. Obviously bondage may not be for everyone. But it's wonderful to have a place to go to find out what dangers may be involved with it, and to get advice on how to avoid finding yourself in a situation that you may not be able to get out of. And if public sex is your cup of tea, at least Hart isn'tafraidto talk about it and remind you that outdoor cruising spots can be a primary target for gay-bashers.

Gay Sex also wisely devotes many of its pages to topics that most men may be too embarrassed to ask others about — even close friends. Many gay men, particularly those still harboring insecurities about their sexuality or those who have recently come to terms with being gay, have questions about whether their behavior, thoughts, and urges are shared by other gay men. Gay Sex addresses those concerns in a no-nonsense fashion, successfully avoiding the dull clinical prose of a medical textbook.

The only setback of Gay Sex is its beefcake, gym-bunny cover and interior illustrations that unintentionally send off the message that this book is best suited to perfect Adonises, not average Joe Schmoes like you and me. Fortunately, Hart gives great advice on body image that should help most readers realize that this book is suitable for everyone:

Good-looking men are no better in bed than men of average or below-average looks. That's self-evident when you think about it. But it bears emphasis because many of us, without having consciously thought about it, assume that a really cute guy will be especially hot in the sack. If anything, the connection is just the opposite: Great Beauties are often lazy in bed because they're accustomed to having the world come to them.

If you feel that nobody's interested in you as a lover or sex partner, you may just be setting your sights on too small a group. The Great Beauties of the world mostly pose and cruise other GBs. The rest of us just have to make do with one another. Between you and me, I think we have more fun.

It's obvious Hart realizes that self-esteem and realistic expectations can be shot when the gay community focuses just on models. Too bad the publisher didn't stick to Hart's message when the cover was selected.

But that minor complaint doesn't detract from the excellence and usefulness of this book; Gay Sex remains one of the year's most important releases. Jack Hart is to be commended for taking a terrific guide and making it even better. No matter if you're in a long-term relationship, still in the closet, a club diva, or just a guy with some questions about all those strange terms you've heard, this new Gay Sex may be the most important addition you can make to your bookshelf this year.

An eye opener to a shy gay

Given the fact that I am a bisexual this book all but convinces me that my reluctance to accept the glaring fact that I am naturally attracted to male is a self defeating nature.Even when I fornicate with my female wife I fantasize that I copulate a male.I utter below my breath to my female wife that her legs and shoulders resemble like my male partner.I gave her a child.Nevertheless I had a guilt conscience that being gay is unnatural an unpardonable sin.The book in questin gave me a mental rehabilitation kindling the hope that an explicit gay life is an honest way of living completely free from affected self esteem.I got a guiding vision and crystal clear insight from the book as to the exemplary way to be a consummate. No other book gave me such a stunnig conviction on any other topic.A marvellous journey to an enigmatic world. The diction is emulating.AS of the moment I finished the book I can defend right down the line that there is nothing to be resisted if your natural inclintion is towards the same sex.tHIS BOOK WILL BE A LAND MARK IN COUNTLESS PEOPLLES LIFE WHO ARE LEADING A SURREPTITIOUS HOMOSEXUAL LIFE FOR THE FEAR OF SOCIETY

Not much new ground here for me.

Don't get me wrong, the material covered in this book is both varied and very well presented. However, I just didn't find anything *new* to try with my partner, Bill. For the less adventurous or more conservative, this book offers a virtual cornicopia of techniques and ideas that allow a man to please his man. Bill and I just found this stuff to be "reruns"...fun but we've been there and done that.

    Go Out and Get It!

I really enjoyed this book...it helped my partner and I see the joy in our relationship. I would also recommend LEAVES OF RED AND GOLD if you want a good gay fiction to read!

    Interesting

I am not gay, not even a man for that matter, but I do want to comment on this book. I am interested because it teaches what men really want and enjoy, so you do not have to be gay to learn and enjoy what this book teaches.
