Overview

Continuing the saga of the bestselling game series!

With the Locust Horde apparently destroyed, Jacinto’s survivors have begun to rebuild human society on the Locusts’ stronghold. Raiding pirate gangs take a toll—but it’s nothing that Marcus Fenix and the Gears can’t handle. Then the nightmare that they thought they’d left behind begins to stalk them again. Something far worse, something even the Locust dreaded, has emerged to spread across the planet, and not even this remote island haven is beyond its reach. Gears and Stranded must fight side by side to survive their deadliest enemy yet, falling back on the savage tactics of another bloody siege—Anvil Gate.

a terrific entry as Karen Travis provides a fascinating spin to the military science fiction saga

The Locust Horde has been apparently destroyed at a high cost to the victors (see Aspho Fields and Jacinto's Remnant). Those who survived begin the arduous seemingly impossible task of rebuilding human civilizations using the fortifications of the defeated enemy as the anchor.

The survivors contend with pirates and outlaws, but having triumphed against a much stronger opponent, the Gears barely blink from a minor threat. However, the idyll of victory ends abruptly as Gears leader Marcus Fenix learned of a new menace much greater than the Locus Horde who feared this adversary. This beast is stalking sentient beings as it marches towards the remote island where the Gears and Stranded must cooperate in what could be last stand using the siege tactics of the Anvil Gate.

The latest Gears of War novel (see Aspho Fields and Jacinto's Remnant) tied to the games is a terrific entry as Karen Travis provides a fascinating spin to the military science fiction saga. Marcus is marvelous as he is stunned to learn of the existence of a predator that frightens the fearless Locus Horde; whatever this species is he figures is bad news as your enemy's enemy remains your enemy. Fans of the full Gears of War universe will want to read the exhilarating fast-paced Anvil Gate as things have gotten dramatically worse for Marcus and his crew.

    Karen does it again !!

What can i say that i havent already said about Karen's writing ? Once again she wrote a great and easy to read installment to the GOW series. In Anvils Gate she seemed to focus more on Damon Baird's thoughts, which was great because she was able to show us another side of him through his thoughts. The story shifts back and forth between the present situation of Lambent attacks on Vectus and Hoffman's memories of the seige at Anvil Gate. I seemed to be more interested in what was happening at vectus than the seige at Anvil Gate. It fails to capture you unlike her last 2 books that kept me wanting to read more of the past. I still love the Gears universe and Karen's writing. You wont be disapointed with this book.

    I Also Recommend:

    Bloody Brilliant

For any fan of the Gears of War series this is a must read as it bridges the gap between game 2 and game 3. The book offers many insights to Damon Baird and Victor Hoffman's personalities and pasts as well as continuing the story of this epic series of games. This book is not for those who dislike bloody books, it is a war book after all, but for those who enjoy a fast paced book and aren't afraid of a little blood it is a great book. I highly recommend the book to any Gears fan or sci-fi fan. Karen Travis does a great job in bring the world of the Gears of War universe to life, and I would recommend any book by her.

    I Also Recommend:

Can't Wait For This To Come Out!

Having been a very big fan of the Gears of War games and the last 2 books in this series, I am extremely excited for the release of this new book. Whether or not they are going to release a 3rd Gears of War game or not is anyone's guess, but either way, it's good to know that at least the story can continue through literature. Enter Aspho Fields, which took place partly between the 2 games and partly during a war that was raging before the Locust emerged before the 1st game. Following that was Jacinto's Remnanat, which takes place immeadiately after the 2nd game...starting out while Jacinto is still sinking, after the events that brought that about. I cannot speculate yet on when Anvil Gate is to take place, because there is no description of that posted yet, but my guess is that more than likely, it will continue where Jacinto's Remnant left off, perhaps with flashbacks to various key points in the past related to different elements of the story. It could, however, also take place back during the time of 2 games...ellaborating on some more happenings, or back again before emergence day...expanding on Emergence Day perhaps or something of that nature. Either way, I'm sure it will be a great book. The previous 2 stories have been awesome, and the Gears team & Karen Traviss can really weave together a great sci-fi/action story. For any sci-fi/action buffs or Gears of War fans that have not yet read any of the books, I definitely recommend that you do. They are great reads. If you are not familiar with the games and the story within, you might be at a slight disadvantage when you begin reading, but Aspho Fields and Jacinto's Remnant do a worthy enough job at filling in some blanks, and you'll be able to grasp enough of what's going on to understand. I do feel compelled to let people know that these books do contain foul language, (they're marines after all). If you are sensitive to foul language, this may not be the right series for you, and I certainly don't recommend that parents allow there young ones to read these. This is not a good childrens/young teen read...but that's just my personal opinion. I would say that it would be okay for 16 and up, but again, that's just my opinion. That aside though, I recommend these books to all Gears of War and sci-fi/action lovers! Good stuff!
