Children's Literature - Heather Robertson MasonCows say "moo" and pigs say, "oink," but what does a lizard say? Well, if you are a gecko the answer is "gecko." The author of this book, part of the "World of Reptiles" series, introduces young readers to these colorful animals. While learning about the life cycle, habitat, and predators of a gecko, young readers are also learning about ecology. For science teachers wanting to bring more reading into their curriculum, this book is just what they are looking for. The bright photographs are perfect for highlighting the gecko's colors and for drawing in reluctant readers. The text is filled with interesting facts and the reading level is good for independent reading. However, it is not a reading skills text and some of the words might still be hard for struggling readers. Another use for this book is for remedial reading teachers at the secondary level. Since the book is easy, but not babyish, older readers will not be insulted.
