Overview

Dylan Shoenfield is the princess of L.A.?s posh Castle Heights High. She has the coolest boyfriend, the most popular friends, and a brand-new ?it? bag that everyone covets. But when she accidentally tosses her bag into a fountain, this princess comes face-to-face with her own personal frog: selfprofessed film geek Josh Rosen. In return for rescuing Dylan?s bag, Josh convinces Dylan to let him film her for his documentary on high school popularity. Reluctantly, Dylan lets F-list Josh into her A-list world, and is shocked to realize that sometimes nerds can be pretty cool. But when Dylan?s so-called prince charming of a boyfriend dumps her flat, her life?and her social status? comes to a crashing halt. Can Dylan?with Josh?s help?pull the pieces together to create her own happily-ever-after?

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly

The perils of popularity are showcased in a lighthearted contemporary novel filled with snappy dialogue. The fun begins when A-lister Dylan drops her designer handbag in a mall's fountain. Her geeky classmate Josh rescues it, and to return the favor, Dylan (reluctantly) agrees to star in his USC application film, documenting the "the inner workings of the in crowd" at Castle Heights High. Told from the alternating perspectives of the two teens, the story traces Dylan's fall from grace as her friends recognize her back-stabbing tendencies around the same time she is dumped by her handsome boyfriend. Her trials parallel Josh's rise in social status when Dylan gives him a makeover. Readers will likely feel more for Josh than for Dylan in the beginning (although his hypochondria does prove annoying), yet aspects of Dylan-even her shallowness-become increasingly endearing as her vulnerabilities come to light. Rather than following the predictable route of having opposites fall in love, Palmer (Cindy Ella) offers a slightly more original and plausible alternative. Ages 12-up. (Feb.)

Dylan Shoenfield is one of the in-crowd at posh Castle Heights High. Her boyfriend is cool and her friends are oh-so-popular. Dylan leads the school in fun and fashion. Her life changes when she drops her fashionable bag in a fountain and it is rescued by Josh Rowen, a film geek, well outside the popular crowd. Dylan agrees to be the subject of a movie he is making as part of the application process to film school. Dylan finds herself becoming friends with Josh, who moves into Dylan's popular crowd. But Dylan's world comes crashing down when a cut of Josh's film footage shows her as a spoiled, selfish diva. Dylan is faced with tough decisions about her place at Castle Heights High School in this frothy appropriation of the princess and the frog fairytale. Reviewer: Melanie Hundley
School Library Journal
Gr 9 Up—Dylan, the most popular girl in school, is dating the most popular guy, and people will trip over themselves to help her out. At least, that's what she's counting on when she accidentally tosses her expensive purse into a mall fountain—but film geek Josh's help comes at a price. He'll retrieve it in exchange for her participation in his documentary about popularity, which he hopes will secure him a place at—and a much-needed scholarship to—film school. At first, Josh's professional drive to finish his movie makes him an overly accommodating doormat to Dylan's divalike behavior, but she softens as he grows a spine and they begin a tentative friendship. When the girl's popularity crumbles at the hands of her now-ex boyfriend, Josh has the opportunity to be the real friend she's needed all along. Dylan and Josh tell their story in alternating chapters. While his voice is that of a mildly geeky Everyman, Dylan's is spoiled and demanding. Her trivial rich-girl problems won't garner much reader sympathy, especially when compared to Josh's own financial status and social exile. The plot is predictable, and the compressed time line of one month seems unrealistic for such a close relationship to develop. Still, the writing is sharp and, at times, funny, so these flaws won't detract from teens' enjoyment of this riches-to-rags title.—Brandy Danner, Wilmington Memorial Library, MA

Meet the Author

Robin Palmer grew up in Massachusetts and New Jersey, and graduated from Boston University before she hit the road for Hollywood. Starting as an assistant in the television literary department of the William Morris Agency, she quickly moved up the ranks and spent the next decade as a literary agent, producer, and television network executive at Lifetime Television, where she developed over one hundred scripts and oversaw the production of over thirty of the cable network's original movies. In 2001, she remembered that she had originally intended to spend her life either as a writer or a toll booth collector (so she could indulge her penchant for spending her days alone reading), but as there are no toll roads in southern California, she decided to give the writing thing a try. Since then, she's written everything from screenplays to essays to a novel to a preschool guide. Although she's constantly threatening to move, she currently resides in New York City.

    Great read!

This book was awesome! Such a fun read and I could not stop reading it until I was finished, unless I had to stop for whatever reason.
Geek Charming is a cute entertaining read about Dylan, a stuck up popular girl who owes this "geek" Josh a favor (there's of course more to this). He wants to be a film maker and in order to get into USC he needs to have a film. That's where Dylan and her two best best friends come in. Josh and Dylan end up having to spend more and more time together in order to get this film done. They both have their reasons for being involved in the making of this film but in the end, who knows what will happen. :D
This book is not predictable, so don't go thinking that you know what will end up happening in the end, because you're probably going to be wrong, surprised and happy about it especially since there is such a great message behind it.
I'll admit that I had a problem with the fact that the popular girl was so stereotypical, but I overall I can let that slide because it definitely did not get in the way of me enjoying the book or liking Dylan.
The narration in this book alternates between Dylan and Josh's POV so the reader really gets in the mind of both of the protagonist. I gotta say I loved knowing what each of the characters were thinking about certain situations. I also loved the funny things each characters said. I found myself laughing out loud at certain lines, so of course I had to share some of them (read below for more).
I do not understand why it is that Robin Palmer's books do not have more fans. I love her writing. This book was a really great, entertaining, YA book. I highly recommend it. Next I'm checking out her other book when I get the chance (read way below for more about this).
Isn't that cover beautiful! I especially love those shoes. :D

    I Also Recommend:

    Loved it!

Geek Charming is about breaking social boundaries in school and it has a sort of behind the scenes look at popularity. Dylan, the super popular girl, and Josh, the "geek", grow a lot in this book and I love the alternating chapters that switch between both of their view points. I really enjoyed it and Robin Palmer is a great author!
