Overview

Everybody loves KJ. Especially the geeks. See, KJ Miller is super nice, smart, pretty, the stage manager of her high school's spring musical . . . and a total geek magnet. She's like the geek pied piper of Washington High, drawing every socially clueless guy in a five-mile radius. If only Cameron, the hottest guy in school, would follow her around and worship her the way her entourage of dorks do. Enter Tama Gold, queen of the popular crowd, and solution to all of KJ's problems. KJ is too nice, and the nice girl never gets the guy. Tama's ready to help KJ get cruel, ditch the dorks, and win Cameron's heart. But is KJ?

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly

On the surface, Scott's (ANon-Blonde Cheerleader in Love, also due this month) novel sounds familiar: smart good-girl KJ is too decent to brush off the socially inept or "unsavory guys" who glom onto her, even though they make it hard for KJ's crush, basketball star Cameron Richardson, to notice her. But when she takes up the job of stage manager for the school's production of Grease, popular Tama, playing the lead role of Sandy, gives KJ some strategic advice: tell the losers to get lost, and go for the guy she wants-and Tama even offers to talk up KJ to her buddy Cameron. Scott shores up this obvious plot in several ways. First, she frames the novel in five "acts," lightly inviting readers to measure her characters against the good/bad stereotypes poked at in Grease. More substantially, she gives KJ an alcoholic father, supplying an insightful foundation for KJ's personality and grounding her story realistically. The result: a genuinely moving heroine and a far stronger story than the cliché-ridden cover art would suggest. Ages 12-up. (May)

Drama is big in the life of KJ Miller. But she also seems to have attracted every geek in school for the past year, while working as stage manager for the yearly school musical. KJ desperately wants to escape the unwanted attention of these geeks and join the popular crowd. Tama Gold makes it happen for her during this year's play. Tama instructs KJ on how to be mean to the undesirables and how to catch the eye of Cameron, the boy KJ always wanted to notice her. KJ's newfound confidence brings both the good and the bad, however. She now has the guts to tell off the geek who constantly leers at her, but also brushes off unpopular yet sweet Fred. She can now tell her struggling alcoholic father that he needs to deal with his problems. But in taking on this new assertive approach, KJ doesn't realize that she's developing problems of her own when it comes to recognizing true friendship and loyalty. Readers will recognize the many-sided issues related to popularity and courage as they are addressed in this clever story about a play that is itself a play. Reviewer: Aimee Cole
School Library Journal

Gr 9 Up- KJ is a girl with problems. All of the boys she likes-those who are cool and suave-don't seem to know she exists, but the geeky guys-theater types, intellectuals, nonhotties-are attracted to her. Since she is nice to them, they hang around and won't leave her alone. When she lands the coveted position as stage manager for the school production of Grease , popular girls befriend her, and, in turn, popular boys. With guidance from a new "friend," she alienates her old acquaintances and best friend in trade for a cute guy. KJ's other problems-an alcoholic father and an unstable home situation-enter into the story, adding a bit of depth to KJ's character and allowing for the final friendship showdown. Written in a chatty, chick-lit style, complete with realistic teen-speak, the book will appeal to older readers. Though there's not much sense of place (other than high school), and the secondary characters are thin, the play's the thing, and this story will appeal to readers who enjoy a funny romance and friendship novel, and will be nice filler for collections that can never have enough "pink" books.-Angela J. Reynolds, Annapolis Valley Regional Library, Bridgetown, NS, Canada

Kirkus Reviews
KJ Miller just can't say no to geeks, which makes her a magnet for Washington High's least desirable bachelors, who range from nerdy to creepy. However, when KJ realizes that her geek-magnet status is repelling her longtime crush, Cameron Richardson, she becomes determined to dump the undesirables. As stage manager of her school's production of Grease, KJ finds her answer in sassy and popular cast member Tama Gold, who takes a vested interest in helping KJ ditch the geeks and attract Cameron. Under Tama's tutelage, KJ slowly sheds her warm, sweet personality and consequently the geeks, but as she surveys the fallout of her actions she wonders if Cameron is worth it. The arrangement of the narrative into a classic five-act arc provides structural interest, but the development of the dramatis personae leaves something to be desired. In general, KJ's character seems flat and naive, except when dealing with her family and its attempts to cope with her father's alcoholism. Predictable, but with a few speed bumps to keep it interesting. (Fiction. YA)

A girl loved by geeks. How can you not love a character that is loved by people who secretly drive her insane?

KJ Miller is a nice girl. She's nice to everyone. She doesn't have a mean bone in her body.

Until she meets Tama Gold. And becomes friends with her. The popular girl. The girl who teaches her how to "stand up" for herself. Or, basically, more or less, teaches her how to be mean!

KJ finally gets the chance to go out with her wildly popular crush and realizes something. But what exactly?

    Is Tama really her friend?

And is her crush really her crush?

GEEK MAGNET is definitely the 2008 summer must-read! I adored KJ right from the first page. There are serious issues in this book, but they are portrayed in the most fabulous way. Funny! A book everyone should read this summer!

    surprisinglyg good.

i did not think this was going to be a good book. originally i didn't even want to get it, but i got it on clearance for 3 dollars, so i figured why not. and to my astonishment this book was really good. i definitely recomend it. my only complaints about this book would have to be about some of the characters' behavior. even the main character ocassionally got on my nerves with her actions. but altogether this book Geek Magnet was worth reading.

Cover. I find that the cover is very self-explanatory and simple. Yet I really like the simplicity of it. You have the girl cowering from a geek. And yet I could not imagine Katie Jean as the girl on the cover. It was repeatedly mentioned that she was short, with red hair, and ginormous boobies. The cover is definitely more of a brown. It was not so much the cover that attracted me to this book as the title and summary.

Plot. Finally, finally, finally, a book were there are geeks as the main love interest. And I mean that in the best way possible. In a niche where all of the love interests have to be brooding, stoic, dark hair, pale skin, and completely apart from any group this book made my week. The love interests all had hobbies. They did things with other people and I could have cried from the shear beauty of it. I also found the book hilarious. I could not stop laughing and there were many parts were I had to cover my mouth for fear of looking like the biggest dork just sitting there reading a book with that ridiculous smile there. Yes, there were points where I wanted to throttle Katie Jean but what book don't I get a little mad at the characters? None. I liked the fact that while she did do some pretty harsh things that she learned from her mistakes and she had to actually work to gain back the friendships with a few of the people that she hurt.

Character(s). I dislike names where you say the actual letters. I can never say them right when I am reading. So let us call her Katie Jean. I was most firmly in her side of the camp through out the beginning of the book because I found Glenn rather creepy. Yet she also had a few other geeks who followed her around and I could not bring myself to be mad at them. They were cute and sweet and while once or twice one of them did something that I found questionable they all had good intentions. I did not like Tama from the beginning and so found almost all of Katie Jean's actions in the middle when she was with Tama detestable. My favorite geek was Fred.

    Sounds like me...continued

Ok so now I did read the book and I loved it. I don't really like to be mean to people so this gave me a good idea of how to deal with the "not my types guys" politely so I dont hurt their feelings. The one thing I didn't like was that I was able to predict who KJ ended up with by like page 50. But I guess that was one of the things that made the book so great, was that KJ got her fairytale ending after all.

I found this book very entertaining and funny.

This book was very entertaining and funny. The reason I gave it 4 stars instead of five is because towards the middle it seemed to lag and not really flow. Other then that the book Geek Magnet was great and if you have time you should read it!
