There is no place like home.

My name is Izetta Pettway-Bendolph Robinson. My grandmother Ella Bendolph and Great grandmother Sallie Miller's work is featured in this book and I am proud to say that I am a recipient of a couple of those wonderful works of art. I have always cheerished the comfort of my quilts as they always made me feel like my grandma was giving me a hug everytime I covered up with one of them. I remember playing as a child in Gee's Bend and how carefree everything was back then. It is only when you move away and reminisce that you realize how special and simple those times were. I am proud to be a part of the Bendolph and Pettway family and am happy that they are finally getting the recognition for their wonderful and hard work.

    The Quilts of Gee's Bend

My name is Reva Pettway Nelson and I am the granddaughter of the late Cherokee Parker Pettway. It is great to see and read postitive things about our family. I only wish that my grandmother were here today (God bless her soul) to enjoy the appreciation being bestowed on our family. This is a wonderful book and I am proud to be able to say that my grandmother played a part in this history.

The Granddaughter of an Ancestor of Gee's Bend

My name is Shirley Pettway, I am the oldest granddaughter of Linda Pettway, one of the vibrant Ancestors featured in this well put together book about my family and other ancestor's family member. For years my family has done beautiful quilting as a sources of work and as a hobbie to help keep the families feed and warm. When others read or view this book I hope and pray that they will Thank God for the many Blessings, because even thou my ancestors went through so much growing up and working hard and still not being able to rise above and have a better way of living than others it is amazing how generations after generations of family memebers that stuck together to over come the obstacles that they faced and sometime still face. Please read this book and try to visualize yourself living in times like then verses time like now. I am very proud of my ancestors and what they have accomplished. One Love! Shirley Pettway (Atlanta, GA)

Left behind and left out, great art.

This collection quilts is a array of the human experience of being leftout and left behind. The women and perhaps some men, frame makers ,made do, with of the scraps of other peoples living. My mother was quilter and basket maker, I know of the process of bearing down to make something out of nothing. Putting the tears aside and working the hands and materials creating something that would remind our children of who we are, as humans. Conrad Bobiwash Educator and Artist
