    Utah's Gem Trails

Most of James Mitchell's material was accurate. In the beginning of the book we are told a permit is required to pick minerals in Utah. In fact, that is not the case. If you are to go to the sites listed in the book, no permit is required. The sites listed are pretty much accurate as far as mileage and landmarks. The dirt/gravel roads were better than expected as the book's topical data represented. If you use this book as a guide to the actual sites, be prepared to be pleasantly surprised. I took a month to travel the sites he listed and came back with approximately 1,500 pounds of minerals. You will need to be prepared as far as equipment, as he so well notes. Quite a few of his sites are on private land and the people do appreciate you asking prior to attempting to collect on their property. I would recommend this book to novice, as well as professional rockhounders. Mitchell does cover most of the sites available and accessible in Utah. He also suggests you contact rock shops or mineral clubs. It would be a good idea. They do expand on what he has written.
