Overview

Between 1880 and 1930, Christian schools established in China by American Protestant missionaries were at the peak of their popularity and autonomy. Editorial Reviews

Booknews
Through careful and thoughtful research Graham (Western Carolina U.) advances the thesis that Christian missionary work in China evolved into a cultural exchange, shifting over the years from evangelism to education. The primary focus is on gender reform in the mission schools as the hub of a wheel which intersected with politics, Confucianism, culture, Chinese nationalism, and political reform. Annotation c.
