About the Author

Rodney E. Kellems is Professor of Biochemistry and Molecular Genetics at Baylor College of Medicine, Houston, Texas. The author or coauthor of more than 60 journal articles and book chapters, he is a member of the American Chemical Society, the American Society for Cell Biology, the American Society for Microbiology, and the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, among others. He has been actively involved in gene amplification research for over 15 years. Dr. Kellems received the A.B. degree (1969) in biology from Bellarrnine College, Louisville, Kentucky, and the Ph.D. degree (1974) in biochemistry from Princeton University, New Jersey.

The author aims the book at molecular geneticists, genetic engineers, and medical scientists to introduce the process and systems of various gene amplifications occurring in mammalian cells. This is an important area, and this book will serve as a good reference for those interested in understanding and applying mammalian gene amplification systems to clinical and basic research. Although this book will be attractive to only special groups of scientists who are interested in the process and systems of mammalian gene amplification, it is concisely and comprehensively written to satisfy many levels of audience including graduate students, residents, and other scientists. This book does not contain any color illustrations, but the black-and-white illustrations are appropriate for the nature of the book. The quantity and quality of the illustrations are appropriate. This is an attractive, well-organized book. Most of the references cited are directly relevant to the topic. The number of references is appropriate, but more recent references would enhance the quality of the book as a valuable and timely reference. One of the strengths of the book is the description of many dif ferent systems by competent investigators. This book would be a valuable reference to those interested in understanding the process and various systems of mammalian gene amplification. The concise and comprehensive coverage of many different systems provides an effective introduction of the topic to many different levels of audience. In addition, this book will serve as an initial source of the relevant literature for specific systems.
